Maya is the industry standard when it comes to visual effects, animation, and game development. They were eventually bought and developed by Autodesk seven years later.
What’s With Maya and Blender? Autodesk MayaĪutodesk Maya-or more popularly known as Maya-is a licensed and leading 3D computer graphics software that was originally developed by Alias Systems Corporation in 1998.
In this article, I’ll tell you more about Maya and Blender, the difference between both software tools, their pros and cons, and what makes them stand out. If you want to know more about 3D modeling, check out my post about it and how it works. The Future definitely belongs to Blender as its development team is more flexible and listens to end user feedback much better than Maya’s owner Autodesk. Is Blender better than Maya? Maya is best if you are aiming to work in animation for big companies whereas Blender is perfect for startups, individuals, small and experimental studios. Don’t worry, in this article, we’ll be spotlighting the two apps. But deciding which of the two is ideal for 3D modeling might be challenging. Both feature an impressive array of tools and features that will bring to life any 3D model that you can think of.
Exporting through FBX or COLLADA allows you to convert units. Seems like most (or at least a lot) of the game engines anymore have moved to FBX format, and some more to COLLADA. Your visual result will be the same as if you had made the building 1500 units tall and the guy 170. Make the guy that will stand in front of it 1.7 units tall, and so on. But in general, an exact scale is not important, so long as you know enough to make all of the parts that go together be scaled relative to each other.Įxample, you can leave Maya in centimeters and pretend it is meters. Or whatever.Īn absolute scale would be important if you were sending a file to somewhere that had specified an exact scale. If you are making multiple things that have to go together, then having them all made (or converted) to the same scale is mandatory if they are to be used together, as in a rendering or a game engine.
